As I reflect on my practices, I write for myself, for my larger school community, and for the Education Leadership Academy in which I engaged during the 2014-2015 school year. This space will house these and other wonderings about education.
Explaining PBL (October 2014) <----Excuse the (partial) Halloween costume in the picture. Stay for the brief article explaining the difference between Project-Oriented and Project-Based Learning.
The Balancing Act (October 2014) <----This article references a few readings for High Tech High's Education Leadership Academy, but the bulk of the article is really about trying to find the right balance between structure and freedom for my students at ChiTech this year.
Confessions of a Not So Innovative Urban Educator (November 2014) <---- Again, this is for the Education Leadership Academy, so there will be references to other writing pieces not included here. This is really a key piece for me for the 2014-2015 school year where I sat down and really examined my practices as a teacher in-depth and questioned if what I do as a teacher is what my students deserve.
Facing the Paradox: or How I Stopped Arguing with Myself in a Google Doc and Learned to Love My Instincts (December 2014) <---- Excuse the silly title. Hopefully, this article about the role of democracy in my practice makes up for it.
The Root of Assessment (February 2015) <---- I skipped the January reading response here because it was perhaps a bit too silly for its own good, but hopefully this more reflective piece is worth a read. I have very strong opinions on how assessment should be used in school, and here I tried to challenge my own views.
Is This For a Grade? (March 2015) <---- During the previous month it was assessment at large. Here, the focus is on grades and what they communicate to students.
When Exhibition Might Not Be Enough (published in the High Tech High Graduate School of Education's UnBoxed: Issue 14) <---- School-wide exhibitions are positive experiences that add value and excitement to the work students do, but how do we move beyond the momentary excitement and focus in on sustained deeper learning?
