Teachers:
Wesley Davidson, Nicole Dudik
Summary:
Students identified icons who have impacted their lives and values. In English, they had their icons approved by a student panel and then developed a writing piece that examined their connections to their icons. In Art, they created a companion piece that visually conveyed that connection.
Essential questions:
What values matter in the 21st century? What makes an individual great in the eyes of others? What is the distinction between an icon and an idol?
Student reflection:
"Through this project, I expected to learn a lot about my icon, but I ended up learning a lot about myself." - Davarian Daniel
"I am really proud of this project, and I put a lot more work into it than usual because I really cared about the topic." - Linda Brown
Teacher reflection:
“Putting the ultimate approval for project choices in students' hands was a great learning experience for me, too. Seeing students revise their presentations based on how our panel of students approved or denied icon choices opened my eyes up to a new way of helping students realize the importance of an audience. It was also great to see students changing their icons midway through the project as they began to more carefully examine whether or not they had meaningful connections to those icons. Lastly, making this a collaborative project with Art and English pushed this project into a space for exhibition and for meaning for students that would have otherwise been missing.” - Wesley Davidson
